HIV/AIDS Program

Education, Treatment & Support

There are an estimated 2.3 million HIV-positive cases in India, affecting the most vulnerable and marginalized people. Tansa Valley community members are particularly vulnerable to HIV/AIDS because of the large migratory workforce and two major truck routes that traverse the Valley.

Launched in 2004, the PRASAD Chikitsa HIV/AIDS program approaches the issue through a range of interventions. The program focuses on creating awareness about HIV/AIDS; providing early diagnosis, treatment and support; and helping children whose lives have been affected by the disease. Currently, approximately 1,700 HIV-positive people are registered with the HIV/AIDS program.

Thanks to PRASAD Chikitsa’s consistent work and increased community awareness, HIV positivity in the Tansa Valley is less than the national level. The Indian government has recognized PRASAD’s facilities as an Integrated Counseling and Testing Center.

HIV/AIDS Program

Education & Awareness

PRASAD Chikitsa social workers, volunteers and doctors give awareness talks in villages for women and students. Through the Program, PRASAD has reached more than 100,000 people,

HIV Testing & Counseling

PRASAD Chikitsa’s Family Health Center provides HIV testing and nearly 5,000 counseling sessions to children and adults annually.

Parent-to-Child Transmission Prevention

One of the most effective ways to combat HIV is to prevent HIV-positive pregnant women from passing the infection onto their unborn children. The Prevention of Parent-to-Child Transmission Program provides free prenatal screenings for HIV to all pregnant women who give informed consent. HIV-infected pregnant mothers receive Antiretroviral therapy (ART) drugs.

Treatment and Support

Taking the whole-person approach and in partnership with Indian Government Centers, PRASAD Chikitsa ensures that all HIV-positive patients who need antiretroviral therapy (ART) receive it and also provides nutritional support, secondary infection treatment, and psychological/social counseling.
